Safe House Stellenbosch

Safe House Stellenbosch ("L'Abri de Dieu"), a member of the Western Cape Women Shelter Movement and the South African National Shelter Network, provide care, shelter, protection and counselling for women and children in the greater Stellenbosch region who have suffered physical and emotional abuse, rape and other traumas related to domestic violence and sexual exploitation.

Despite being one of the most affluent towns in South Africa, Stellenbosch is also sadly a town of great disparity which includes many farm and rural communities, as well as informal settlements. The Stellenbosch Magistrate Court has processed up to 800 applications per year for Family Violence Protection Orders since 2005.

The residents of the Safe House, all from previously disadvantaged, low-economic backgrounds, not only receive much-needed physical and emotional support, but are also empowered through skills training including employability, parenting, relationships, finances, life planning, etc., allowing the women to take full control of their lives when they re-enter their community.

To bring healing to families, Safe House arrange separate counselling for the men, which includes anger management and the “twelve steps” program. They also arrange couple’s counselling, and continued support after the resident has left the shelter.

Why they need your help now:

On an ongoing basis, Safe House Stellenbosch are extremely busy caring for the women and children who come to the shelter in crisis. Sadly, the need for the services they provide is not diminishing at all - rather it is increasing on a daily basis.

Consequently, they need to enlarge the facility of the Safe House in order to accommodate more residents. Safe House Stellenbosch are now exploring all avenues to generate funds for their building project.
